Like you, we are exasperated by the regularity of the pipe bursts and water leaks in our area and frustrated by the traffic congestion and delays to our journeys.

Both before and since our election in 2022, we have been putting pressure on Thames Water for infrastructure investment in our area. Although we recognise the fragile financial position of the company, the frequency of the bursts on Elmstead Lane (which is actually just outside our ward boundary) and also on Yester Road is untenable. Ashfield Lane has also seen many bursts along its length, including again only a couple of weeks ago.

Last week saw yet another major burst on Elmstead Lane with the road originally having to be closed and then put under two way lights. Until the works are completed, Chislehurst is in gridlock at peak time thanks also to the scheduled closure of Prince Imperial Road for gas works by SGN. Thank goodness it is half term otherwise it would be even worse!

Thames Water is the statutory undertaker and the overarching decision-maker regarding where and when investment is made within their network.  However, as well as us as your elected representatives, Council officers also continue to represent local concerns and to seek assurances that the most affected areas, such as Chislehurst, are being appropriately prioritised within Thames Water’s investment plans.   They have also made it clear that the frequency of bursts in our area is unacceptable and that a programme of replacement investment is urgently required.

As a result of the pressure both we and the Council have put on Thames Water, we are very pleased to advise that they have confirmed that Elmstead Lane has been identified for inclusion in their mains replacement programme, with works planned to take place early next year.

We will of course keep you informed as to our ongoing discussions with Thames Water and as further details of the planned replacement works become available.
