New Yellow Box Junction Installed at the War Memorial Junction

Over the past few weeks, there has been a significant amount of utility work in and around Chislehurst, making the War Memorial junction, busier than usual, especially with Prince Imperial Road currently closed. We will continue to monitor the junction closely, and if you have any feedback or concerns, please don’t hesitate to let us know.

As part of the ongoing improvement works at the junction, Transport for London (TfL) has installed a new yellow box junction. This is an important step in managing traffic flow and preparing the area for the new pedestrian crossings currently being developed.

What Is a Yellow Box Junction?

A yellow box junction is designed to keep traffic flowing at busy intersections. The criss-cross yellow lines mark an area of road space that must be kept clear at all times. Drivers may only enter the box if their exit road or lane is clear, ensuring vehicles do not block the junction and delay other road users.

The rule is set out clearly in the UK Highway Code (Rule 174):

“You must not enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear.”

This rule helps prevent congestion, particularly at signal-controlled junctions where vehicles might otherwise queue across the intersection and obstruct other movements.

The Special Rule for Turning Right

There is one important exception which often causes confusion.

Drivers are allowed to wait in the yellow box when turning right, provided that:

  1. They are prevented from completing the turn only because oncoming traffic is approaching.
  2. Because other vehicles are waiting to turn right.

In other words, if you are turning right and the exit lane you intend to move into is clear, you may enter the box and wait in the middle for a safe gap in oncoming traffic. However, if the exit lane is blocked (for example, by queuing traffic), you must not enter the box until the way ahead is clear.

Helping Everyone Move Safely and Efficiently

The addition of the yellow box junction is intended to make the area safer and smoother for all road users, whether driving, cycling, or walking. By following the Highway Code and being considerate of others, drivers can help ensure the junction operates effectively once the full crossing scheme is in place.
